A Youngstown-Based Homeownership Program

A real home. A real plan. A real path to owning it.

Youngstown Homestead renovates and builds homes across our neighborhoods — and pairs them with the classes, coaching, and financing bridge that turn renters into owners.

The Homestead Pathway

A four-step path from renting to owning

Most homeownership programs hand you a brochure. We give you a home to live in, classes to prepare you, and a mortgage we carry while you build the credit and savings to qualify.

1

Move In

Rent a quality renovated home in a target neighborhood — built or rehabbed by local contractors.

2

Get Ready

Free classes on budgeting, credit, and qualifying for an OHFA first-time homebuyer mortgage.

3

Bridge the Gap

We carry the mortgage for up to 24 months while you season your credit and build your down payment.

4

Own It

Refinance into your own conventional or OHFA loan — you keep the home, the equity, and the keys.

Who We Are

Built by neighbors, run with finance discipline

Youngstown Homestead is led by a finance and tax professional who grew up here. We're a small team that treats every home as a mortgage we'll have to defend in front of an underwriter — because for two years, we will.

That discipline keeps the work honest. Every renovation has a budget. Every household has a plan. Every block has a goal.

Why It Works

Classes built around a real home — not a hypothetical one

Most homebuyer education is generic. Ours is tied to a specific neighborhood, a specific price range, and a specific lender path — so what you learn on Tuesday actually applies on Friday.

About Us

Youngstown built it. Youngstown should own it.

Youngstown Homestead exists to turn the city's housing stock into something residents can move into, fix up, learn in, and eventually own.

Our Story

A finance-first answer to a long-standing question

For decades, Youngstown's homeownership challenge has been framed as a supply problem or a credit problem. It's both — and the two have to be solved together.

We renovate and build homes in target blocks. We run classes that take residents from "I want to own someday" to "I'm pre-approved on Friday." And for the gap between those two — the 24 months when a household's credit is still maturing — we carry the mortgage ourselves.

When that note is seasoned, we sell it on the secondary market. The proceeds go back into the next block.

How We're Different

Five design choices that shape every decision

1

Owner-Carry Bridge

We hold the mortgage for ~24 months, then sell the seasoned note. Standard practice — uncommon in mission housing.

2

Renter-to-Owner Pipeline

A designed farm system. Tenants are the most likely future buyers — we treat them like it.

3

Finance Discipline

Every house is underwritten. Every class outcome is measured. Every block has a P&L.

4

Neighborhood Focus

Concentrated investment in 3 target blocks. Visible change beats scattered effort.
